Emma Danielle has been writing since age ten—one of the few people ever grounded for reading instead of cleaning. A lifelong lover of storytelling, she realized in English class that the worlds she escaped into were created by writers just like her. Since then, she’s honed her craft for years, including writing for the YouTube animation Parasocial: A VTuber Story (Part 1). My name is Xiaomei.This is the story of how I died.Perhaps I should start at the beginning.The Monster Lands have always been protected by the Veil. It was a gift from the gods to keep the persecuted monsters safe. While dragons were to lead the armies and protect the people, qilins were to upkeep and safeguard the Veil.Xiaomei, a young qilin, made a mistake. Failing the expectations of her superiors was not something on her to do list and she feared the reprimand that was to come. She was meant to help rule one day. She was held to a high standard, one that she struggled now to attain. Her best friend and fellow future leader, Eltanin, was sent on one final training with the Elder of the Dragons. Xiaomei was assigned a mentor to help her get back on her feet. It would be simple, wouldn’t it? Nothing could go wrong, could it?Thus begins her journey, her passage from one life to the next, to the end of it all. But was it the end, but a beginning?
